Hey all, I'm curious if anyone has had success making their own slipmats. Im thinking of grabbing some material next time in able and messing around with some fabric combinations to see if I can get something thin and functional that won't curl over time.

I haven't really tried making my own slip mats at this point, but i will share what I currently use. I took off the stock slipmat that comes taped to the numark pt01 portable, and had to use some goo gone in order to get the rest of the adhesive off of the plastic platter. Once I did that I put down a piece of cooking parchment paper (cut to size with a hole in the center) and then placed my shortrug slipmat on top of that. I am comfortable with the mobility of those 2 working together. There are several 7" slipmats out there with the portable tablist in mind it seems. I'm open to hearing some other ways people have utilized different fabrics to achieve this.

I bought a variety of felt and nylon from Jo-Ann fabric. What worked best for me (before I bought the Short Rug and Raiden slip mat) was cutting out a piece of wax paper from one of my old vinyl records I didn't care about and placing it under one of the felt cutouts I made. Felt is cheap so buy as many varieties as you can and see which one works best.

Are they similar in terms of the fabric used for the top and bottom portion of the mats?

Both are made from two totally different materials. Raiden seems like it's made with a nylon fabric, while the Short Rug is made with some light paper like fabric.

Like Paul said, I give a slight edge to the Raiden, although both are way better than these Stokyos I bought (not worth it, IMO). With light weight scratchers like the Skiratcha and Triad Breaks, both do well with these low-torque portable tables. But slap on a heavier 7" like the SWAPs or Baby Seal, you won't get a great amount of "slippage" (that a word?).

Well worst case scenario, I'd cut my undershirt like the good ol' days and make my own slipmat. LOL
For real though... There's nothing wrong cutting down an old slipmat that worked for you before.
I agree with mrvltrn, the thinner and slicker the material... the better these 7"s will slide on those portables.

And of course a couple copies of magnum breaks, but I'm lookin forward to using the slip mat and seeing how it compares.

I picked up a raiden slipmat. Very light weight. I took off the factory taped mat and installed the raiden, but now I have an issue. When I play a record it slows down and the rims drop and raise. Meaning it is so slippery that the record is not being spun all the time as the turn table rotates. Sounds like I'm changing the speed between 33 and 45. I reinstalled the factory mat and put the raiden mat over it and worksee fine. Has anyone else had this issue. And do we know if the raiden mat is supposed to be installed over factory or by itself?

So i cut my old butter rug and frosted plates, left the factory taped mat alone and its good.

DIY is pretty easy. I have butter rugs on my 1210s and needed something for a new portable turntable. The key is 'interfacing material' from any fabric shop, it comes in various thicknesses, if you know someone who sews, they probably have some off-cuts. I used a medium weight. I stuck the interfacing material to some slippery nylon material I had spare. Interfacing material usually has a glue that allows you to iron the materials together temporarily, I used a standard glue stick to make them stick permanently. Just cut it and make the center hole, and it works as good as the rugs, in fact they feel very similar to the touch. For records that are warped, they will slip too much on one side. Putting a spongy layer, like some material, between the platter and the slipmat helps (I used some leftover protective plastic packing film that some ebay parcel was wrapped in). The mat that came with my portable was too thick, pushing down with my record hand see-sawed the stylus side up and threw the needle into the next groove.

I ended up cutting down a butter rug and it's working fine. Waiting on that sick-as-hell Demonio 7 and slipmat to come in the mail though 🙆🏻

Take a piece of copying paper from printer and cut out to vinyl size and put under your slip mat of choice.
