I first became aware of the portablism scene when I came across a video/link/article on the Mixfader when they still needed crowd funding. I thought it was a pretty neat idea and not much else. That was until I saw another article and video from Mojaxx reviewing portablism gear and I was intrigued. I am keen on the idea of portable gear, Particularly as I don't have a lot of space at home and had to sell my full turntable DVS setup a few years back. I haven't had much joy attempting to learn to DJ and scratch on controllers (no moving platters) and like the potential idea of being able to have a decent setup on a budget I can set up and pack away neatly with minimal hassle.
So, I began to do my research and it seems I may be a bit late to the party as such considering some of the major portable USB Turntables people are using are discontinued rarities that cost a bomb. I found that open format.la will customise and modify a Numark PT01 USB for you, but even stock Turntables were around £79 on the current dollar exchange and to ship two to the UK worked out at £350, which was obscene. I decided against that for now.
Because of this my choice for a portable turntable would either come down to a Numark PT01 Touring Suitcase Turntable or a PT01 Scratch. Before I discuss my reasons behind my brief research debate I will outline what I want from my ideal setup...
2 x portable Turntables
1 x Akai Pro AMX two channel serato controller mixer
2 x 7" serato control vinyl
1 x Mixfader
Various 7" Battle records
The idea of my setup would be a home setup through a laptop and PC speakers (space and budget), but I would use one turntable with the Mixfader out and about with my Android smartphone and Tablet through a USB OTG Cable and a control vinyl to access my audio, as well as the 7" Battle Records.
My predicament is debating which turntable to pick up.
The PT01 Scratch looks great but I am unsure if the scratch switch would be sufficient enough as I have heard a mixed bag of reviews, I am also unsure whether or not that would affect the playback of using it as an actual turntable, seeing as I want to cop two of them for my setup. RRP @ £109.00
The PT01 Touring is an interesting one to debate as it is just as standard as it gets for a portable turntable. But I have done a brief amount of research online this weekend and have found posts on social media (Instagram) to see some people have modified them and added faders and made it more DJ/scratch worthy. If it does support a mixfader DVS setup through the USB output it would make it a worthy contender for a decent portable turntable. Price wise it is £59.00, which makes it £60 cheaper than the Scratch equivalent. I wouldn't want to do too many expensive wiring mods to this turntable. Merely secure the platter, tone arm and replace the folding hinges with flightcase style hinges so that I can remove the lid altogether.
I suppose the point of this post is to discuss, debate and gain advice from others about their choices of the Turntables out there (seeing as the popular choices are pretty hard to get hold of currently) and what people's setups are and above all, is what I have written valid and should I go for the Touring Suitcase over the Scratch? As that is what I am more in favour of. Any feedback received is greatly appreciated. My budget is pretty low but hopefully I can start copping what I wish to pick up soon and shall let you know how I get on.
Thank you.
